Other Ingredient Names for Gelatin????
Question by aslkdfncx: Other ingredient names for gelatin????
I’m a vegetarian, and am not supposed to eat foods containing gelatin. I always read the ingredients of things to look for gelatin. I was wondering, are there any alternative names for gelatin that I should be looking for? For example, I know to also avoid “collagen”. What other ingredients should I look to avoid? What about keratin?

Aspic is an industry alternative for gelatin, made from clarified meat, fish or vegetable stocks and gelatin. It may also be called gel. Keratin is also not vegetarian; it is made from the ground-up horns, hoofs, feathers, quills and hair of various creatures.

Both alternatives you will look for are seaweed derivatives. one is Agar and one is Carageenan. Pectin is similar, but thickens jelly , not strong enough for jello
Some gelatinous desserts can be made with agar instead of gelatin, allowing them to congeal more quickly and at higher temperatures. Agar, a vegetable product made from seaweed, is used especially in quick jelly powder mix and Asian jelly desserts, but also as an alternative that is acceptable to vegans. Agar is more closely related to pectin and other gelling plant carbohydrates than to gelatin.
Another vegan alternative to gelatin is carrageenan. This alternative sets more firmly than agar, and is often used in kosher cooking. Though it, too, is a type of seaweed, it tends not to have an unpleasant smell during cooking as agar sometimes does.
No, gelatin is the only one using animal bones for the gelatin, you can use agar agar as a substitute
As far as I’ve read or seen, there are no other names for Gelatin. Even when contained in other foods that are present, e.g. marshmallows in rocky road ice cream, the gelatin content is written in the ingredient list.
This is a good site to save..it has many words and explanations including gelatin ……… http://www.vivausa.org/health/hiddennasties.html ….. it should help with many terms..just scroll down ..and Kosher gelatin is usually fish derived .. it is Not animal free ..
You’re on the right track. If you’re avoiding anything made from gelatin, be careful with vitamins and supplements that you take that might be in gelatin capsules. There are some companies who make vegetarian capsules. This website has a great glossary of animal ingredients and what they’re used for : http://www.vegfamily.com/lists/animal-ingredients.htm
boiled hoofs and skin and bones. look it up on line its the truth. collagen is bone juice.
