Many special events prefer to decorate with flowers. Dances, funerals, and graduations are only three of many activities throughout life that prod people to desire flower arrangements. Flowers are so widely available it makes it easy for citizens of even the smallest of towns to acquire bouquets. The more than plentiful supply of flowers, and ease of ordering, makes it quite easy to fail to remember that someone actually hand-makes detailed bouquets. Each florist, regardless of location, is the person who rightfully earns credit by making beautiful flower arrangements.
Similar to the act of standing in line, the act of giving flowers dates back many years. There is no exact date that documents when flowers were first exchanged within societies. However, according to historians and archaeologists, it is pretty safe to assume the act of giving flowers dates back to pre-historic times.
There are records, however, of flowers and flower giving in the form of cave drawings, early Greek poetry, and various writings. These notations are what is considered to be the earliest known written records in human history. As time went on, most notably beginning in the year A. D. 4000, the simple act of giving a flower became a popular means of showing love and affection. This gesture lives on through the present.
Over the course of time a practice known as Floriography gained in notoriety. This name is associated with the attributes attached to flower colors and flower type; in some cases even stem length and flower placement. There is little variation between publications which explain the meanings of different colors and flowers. There may be small differences, but all in all, the meanings to send flowers are the same.
In addition to send flowers, people also started to make garlands, tiara’s, and wreaths. This all can be credited to the Greeks. Another popular habit which is still thought of enough to use today is the cornucopia. Often times associated with the Thanksgiving holiday, this horn-shaped item was made popular by the Greeks as well. Cornucopia’s were used as and were filled with a variety of edibles and flowers.
Not many things in life stand the test of time. Freshly cut flowers display supple petals for a limited time, usually only days. Receiving and sending flowers, however, never goes out of style. The visual appeal, coupled with the pleasant scent, makes receiving flowers a wonderful thing. Sending flowers, for any number of reasons, satisfies both the sender and receiver.
Floral traditions will not fade anytime soon. Moreover, some people prefer to dry their flowers in between the pages of a book or by hanging them upside down. Using the book method flattens a flower while hanging them keeps them more three-dimensional. Potpourri is also another popular use for fallen petals.
Being a florist is not as easy as simply putting flowers in a vase. A lot of study and practice must be completed to be a quality floral provider. Not only do florists serve private people, they also provide arrangements to companies and celebrities. Truly understanding the meanings of flower colors, bouquet size, and water additives is just the beginning. Many in this line of work also study botany and gardening in addition to creating floral arrangements.
