Precautionary Actions That Should Be Practiced to Ensure the Safety of Children Near the Pool
Never leave children unsupervised near a pool. Disaster can easily strike, as children like water and will naturally want to go near the pool. Once they fall in, it only takes a few seconds to drown. Even if you are only going to be gone for a moment, always keep your children in your presence.
Having safety equipment available is important. If an emergency does happen, you never want to be caught unprepared.
A shepherd’s hook is a good safety device to have around. It can be used to remove a drowning person from the pool, saving you the potentially dangerous trouble of entering the pool yourself to save them. Drown victims have been known to lock their arms around their rescuers, impairing the rescuer’s ability to swim and effectively killing them both. Another useful device is one that greatly assists anyone in an emergency of any kind: a phone. Being able to call for help is important, should the situation escalate beyond your capabilities.
Install a fence around your private pool. This prevents children from getting to it without supervision and ensure no one can get into it without your knowledge.
However, a fence can be completely useless if it not tall enough to prevent entry. They should be 6 feet tall and possess a lockable gate. Anything less and it becomes easy for mischievous kids to scale the fence and get into trouble. So make sure your fence is an effective one.
Knowing how to perform CPR makes you an asset in any emergency life or death situation, and makes anywhere you are a much safer place. If someone needs to be revived by CPR, you will have the ability to save them.
Always be extra wary when you have anyone around your pool who doesn’t know how to swim. Accidents happen, and when people don’t know how to take care of themselves in the water, it falls to others to keep them safe. Being aware of your surroundings can mean a resuscitated friend as opposed to a dead one.
Pools should be places of safe, family fun. Know your safety rules and prepare yourself for the worst; only then can you relax in the knowledge that your loved ones are safe and you are ready for whatever happens.
